Purchases made on Friday’s Fun Day

 

There were so many beautiful things to see, and I love to look at them, but I am not shabby chic or live in a wonderful cottage.

My style and furniture is eclectic.

Sharon and I both bought one of these metal bird baths.  Laurie had them on long tables filled with flowers, etc as center pieces.  My table is too small, so I will put it on floor and decorate it for Easter.

Here is a roll of burlap wired ribbon,  several rolls of green moss, green eggs, a nest and I bought 6 of the square white plates.

I have lots of Easter stuff, so I just picked out things to redo and add to my stuff.

Changing the subject completely…

I have pictures of my tomato plants.

Sorry the sun was very bright, but they have really grown.  I can’t wait for some real tomatoes.

I am off this morning to take Fritz (very large black dog, part Chow) to the vet to have them cut some of his hair and give him a bath. 

While that is happening, a quick trip to College Station to pick up a few things.

Roy has gone to Corpus Christi to see his mother, we received a phone call Saturday night that she is very close to the end.  They have taken her to the hospital. Please pray for her and Roy, he is taking this very hard.

The cancer has spread throughout her whole body and she is in a great deal of pain.

Your prayers will be greatly appreciated.

SERENDIPITY MARKET!!!!!!!

CANTON here we come.  Sharon Sarandos  (one of the most talented, gifted and giving lady I have the pleasure of knowing) and I left at 7:30 a.m for Canton to Laurie Anna’s Serendipity Market.

Not only were we anxious to see the merchandise, Laurie Anna and of course the sweet Tina of Cherry Hill Cottage,but they were serving champagne and finger food.

We arrived a few minutes after 9:00 and the place was alive with ladies and gents, who were just dying to buy some or all of the beautiful merchandise that was for sale.

Outside on the porch, Patina Green had her lovely wares displayed and on the ground was Willow’s Nest.

I took as many pictures as I  could…….

This is Tina and my wonderful friend Sharon. We didn’t have a lot of time to visit, Tina was very busy helping customers.

We left with our bags of goodies and oh yes, we had our glass of champagne!

Next on our list was Paul Mitchell’s, a little disappointing.  They had closed off part of their store to rearrange and most of the Easter was in that part.

Not to be discouraged we headed into town and visited another antique store and then on the totheTea Room for lunch.

Just to walk off our lunch, we decided to visit a few shops around the square…first stop a darling boutique called The Very Thing, and they have in my humble opinion some of the cutest clothes and accessories….I took a couple of things off her hands.  We visited a few more stores, then headed to Athens. 

We stopped at the Sweet Pea and then found a cute shop with a Tea Room and had dessert.

Next stop was Star of Texas Antiques in Palestine on Oak Street.  She was putting out Easter and had some cute Easter Trees, etc.

As I stepped up to the counter to pay for the nest and eggs I had bought, there sat a Waterford Crystal Ship’s Decanter for less than 1/2 price in perfect condition.  Wow, there was Roy’s birthday present. 

Laughing, broke and so happy to have shared my Friday with Sharon, we headed home.  Sharon with a head full of ideas and me to feed dogs, cats and goats. 

What a great day we had….wish each of you could have been with us.

Hope I haven’t bored you.  Tomorrow I will show you some of our purchases.

Yesterday and Today!

 

Yesterday was Bridge Club and guess who had the highest score…yep..the Purple Goat Lady.  We all had a great time, there was lots of laughter and great desserts provided by the hostess. We all bring our own lunch.

TODAY, I am so excited, Sharon and I are headed to Canton for the first Serendipity Market given by Laurie Anna at Laurie Anna’s Vintage Home.  She will be joined by Patina Green and  Willow Nest Farms displaying their wares for Spring.  They are serving Champagne this morn and I am sure it will be a gala affair.  Sharon and I are leaving at 7:30, it is about 100 miles, but you know that is just a short day trip in Texas. I will take pictures to share with those who live to far away to join us.

Janie at Southern Lagniappe won the heart bracelet at Valentine’s and I resized it for her to give to her granddaughter Avery. She was so kind as to sent me pictures of Avery opening the gift.  Thoughtful things like that  make and keep the world a wonderful place to be.  Thanks Janie!

I taught a class in the Texas Prison System for 4 years preparing men to return to society with some skills to help them be better and more productive citizens.  We talked every morn about random acts of kindness, and some actually tried to do that within the walls of the prison.

Some days I forget, but since I have started blogging, I am trying harder to do at least one act of kindness everyday.  I know most of you do, but if not join me in my efforts.

I will leave you with a recipe today.  One of my favorite cookbook is Southern Sideboards from the Junior League of Jackson, Mississippi.

 

Stuffed Spice Peaches

2 (29 oz) jars of spiced peaches (reserve juice)

2 (3oz) packages orange gelatin

8 ounces cream cheese, softened

1/4 to 1/2 cup chopped pecans

1 to 2 Tablespoons mayonnaise

Grease a 6-cup ring mold lightly with oil.  Bring peach juice to a boil; stir in gelatin until dissolved. Cool  Mix cream cheese, pecans and mayo. 

Remove the seed from each peach and stuff with the cream cheese mixture.

Press the halves back together so that the peaches appear whole.  Place stuffed peaches close together in mold and pour gelatin over them.  Refrigerate until congealed.  Turn out of mold onto lettuce covered tray.  Serve with mayo.   Serves 12

Time for Checkup!

Today is my yearly checkup and I have to be in College Station at 8:00 a.m., so just a short hello and happy to see some of you were reminded to start planting your tomatoes, etc.

I am almost finished with my next give-away, which is a boy baby blanket done on Monk's cloth in green and blue yarn (swedish weaving). Why a boy blanket...Roy picked out the yarn, what can I say.

Roy goes back to work today, so I will have a week to work and play on whatever I choose, but I does get lonely.

LADIES …..TIME TO RISE UP AGAINST TASTELESS TOMATOES!

Are you tired of buying thick skinned, almost no smell, with light colored insides and most of all no taste tomatoes? It hardly looks like a real tomato and within a day or two they are all soft and mushy. I am, I love tomatoes. There is nothing better than a warm red ripe tomato sandwich.

Grow your own…so easy and for us in the south, it is time to plant. There are many places to buy and many varieties to choose from. I like Beefsteak tomatoes because of their size and flavor.

I just planted 4 tomato plants that were about 6 inches high in large pots. They are sitting out under my shed on the barn. Planting in pots make them so easy to care for, you can move them around according to the weather. I water about every three days until small fruit appears and then you may need to water a little every day.

With a little TLC, you will be surprised in about 12 weeks the number of tomatoes you will have from just a few plants.

I am sure there are lots of bloggers out there who have a garden or who grow a few vegetables in pots or their flower beds. If so, please share so tips with us . I will report my progress with pictures every few weeks.

SUCH A SIMPLE THING!

Roy came home from the rig with a pair of shorts that needed a button.  No big deal, right?

1. eyeball the button whole to get an idea of the size you need and …

2. check the color of the thread used in sewing the shorts.

3 now we are ready to start our hunt for the above items.

4. we also need a needle and a pair of scissors.

All we need now is a pair of scissors and we are in business……

Several minutes later and I do mean several minutes, you are ready to sew the button on…..Then I take a good look at these shorts he is so worried about and low and behold….they have a ripped pocket and the elastic in the waist is lost all it function…..but he says they are just fine and all he needed was ONE button.

Oh well, he has his button and he is happy, so why am I stressing over these “Over the Hill Shorts”

Ps Tara left Saturday afternoon, we had a wonderful visit.  She is planning on coming back on the Fourth of July, so she can ride my new jet ski.

A Happy Mother

We are talking, talking and setting my new computer.

 

We only left the house yesterday to drive thru the bank and get Tara some diet Cokes.  My new all-in-one computer came and we spent the day on the floor setting it up and transfering information.

Tara just built a new home so  we downloaded pictures and discussed and  discussed her house, the colors, furniture, pool, etc.    

Remember she just moved in and needs lots of stuff….This  is living room.

I am really proud of her, she has done a great job , she researched everything and choose wisely.

She raises goats, cows, horses and has a donkey, 3 dogs and several cats….kinda like her mother.

Mother’s like to brag and I am no exception.

It rained in Jewett yesterday, not much, but we thank the Good Lord for every drop.  There is suppose to be more today. 

My yard and pasture are  dirt and  Roy said, he was soon going to  dust the catfish for ear ticks.   That sounded bad!

I haven’t been to many blogs in the last several days, so I hope everyone is ok.

MY DAUGHTER ARRIVED LAST NIGHT!

 

Tara arrived about 7:00 pm, hungry and tired.  It was wonderful to see her.  I think I will take a few days off  just to sit and visit. Don’t forsake me…I will return soon.

WOW, THESE WERE DELICIOUS!

 

 

Chavrie® Stuffed Grape Leaves

Serves 8-10

Ingredients · ½ C minced onions · 2 Tbsp. olive oil · 1tsp. chopped garlic · 1ea. tomato, chopped · 1oz lemon juice · 1C cooked long grain rice · 1/4 C chopped dill · 1 pkg. 4 oz. Chavrie® Goat Log · 1 (16-ounce) jar grape leaves Instructions Heat the oil in a skillet, add the onions and cook over medium heat until the onions are soft and translucent, about 10 minutes. Add the garlic and tomato, lemon juice and salt and pepper to taste. Cook for another 5 minutes. Stir in the rice. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the dill. Set aside to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate. Meanwhile drain the grape leaves and carefully pull them apart. Put them into a bowl of cold water. Let them soak until you are ready to roll. Heat the oven to 350°F. Place a grape leaves on your work surface, shiny side down. Add 1 tablespoon of the rice mixture to the middle of the grape leaf. Along with a thin slice of Chavrie® Fold the sides over the rice and roll the leaf into a small log shape, about the size of a cigar Repeat with the remaining rice mixture Place the rolled grape leaves into a casserole dish. When all the mixture or cheese is used, cover rolled leaves with several layers of flat grape leaves and pour in 1 cup of chicken stock Cover and bake for 45 minutes Let cool to room temperature and refrigerate. Serve well chilled

This is a great party dish and easy for me out in the country to find the ingredients.

I am headed to College Station today to get my nails done and a little and I repeat shopping……I love to shop.  

It is going to be in the 70’s day, but the wind is blowing like crazy…we have had wind since Oct., which is unusual for us.   People are complaining and it is getting on their last nerve.  Yesterday sustained winds of 15-20 miles per hour with gust up to 35 mph.  Juan and I were working outside and I had to come in several times, just to get out of wind.   Strange weather patterns.

Today is clean up day in anticipation of Tara’s arrival…..of course she doesn’t care if I clean or not, but I do.  Don’t want her to think her old mother can’t still cut the mustard!!!!!!!!!!

We had a great bridge day yesterday.  If you don’t play games with some of your friends, I think you miss a lot of good laughs. We play what we call party bridge…..no one gets upset over mistakes and we all help each other.  It was a day full of laughter and good desserts.

I am still working on the baby afghan, which this time is for a boy or at least it is blue and green.  This will be the next give away.  Alert any of your friends that have baby boys or grand children to get ready to register.

Sorry to report that Little Man didn’t make it….I think she just didn’t enough milk… the the other one the dogs got after died also. This breaks our hearts, but Roy keeps reminding me that is part of raising animals, but  don’t let him fool you, I have seen a tear or two in his eyes when one dies.  There are a whole bunch of baby goats running around heaven!

I have a special request today ….Roy’s mother is dying with cancer.  It is all over her body and without strong medication, she would be in terrible pain.  Please pray with us that God will comfort her take her to be with him.  Thank You.

MY LATEST ATTEMPT AT CREATIVITY!

 

I would love to be creative and crafty like most of you…but I am not, so I do the few things I can and enjoy the fact I can do something.  This is my latest project, an afghan in apple green and teal for the lake house, using swedish weaving.         The  colors are much more vivid than shown here.

It is for the Sun Room, which because of all the glass, can be cool in winter time.

  

I AM ALSO A TERRIBLE PICTURE TAKER, THE SUN ROOM IS FULL OF BEAUTIFUL COLOR AND LOTS OF INTERESTING THINGS, I WILL WORK ON MY PHOTOGRAPHY SKILLS.

GOAT CHEESE RECIPE

CHAVRIE  STUFFED MUSHROOMS

MAKES 24 SERVINGS

Ingredients:

24  2-2 1/2 inch stuffing mushrooms

8 qz. loose Italian sausage

1/3 cup Italian style bread crumbs

1 pkg. 5.3 oz Chavrie Pyramid  plain or basil and roasted garlic cheese

2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

 

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Clean mushrooms with soft brush and remove  stems.  Chop stems in food processor.  Mix sausage, bread crumbs, 2/3 pkg of cheese and chopped mushroom stems.

Stuff each mushroom cap with about 1 tablespoon of sausage mix.  Place on baking try and bake 15 to 18 mintues, or until sausage is cooked  and mushrooms are tender.

Arrange on serving platter and top each one with a dollop of cheese and sprinkle with chopped parsley.

ANOTHER BABIES IN THE PAYPEN!

Yesterday while Juan was working in the yard, I turned of the electric fence and one of the baby goats climbed under and got in the yard.     Although my dogs have about 3-4 acres to run in, they consider it their yard and usually kill anything that enters. Example:   skunk, armadillo, etc.  and  even though they see the goats everyday, they are strangers in their yard.

They got the baby goat, but I got there before  they could do any real damage, we hope.  The torn the skin on his gut but it doesn’t appear that they punctured it.  Of course, the local feed stores were out of items needed to sew the wound together.  My husband said they always super glued their hog hutting dogs, so we had no choice by to try that, he was already swelling and it was 8 up.m. He got a shot for infection and now we will pray.  He is standing up this morn and he did eat and drink.  Roy says he stands a chance it he doesn’t go into shock.  We get upset and  punish the dogs, but we really can’t blame them.  They are not allowed in any pasture, so the yard is their territory.

We worked hard yesterday cleaning the yard 3 plus acres and picking up fallen branches in the pasture.

Roy goes back to work for a week today, so most major work will end, but Juan will come Friday and finish some little things.

My Daughter is coming Sunday, I haven’t seen her in over a year,  she has a large ranch with many cows and goats and lots of acreage.  She also has an incurable disease, that limits  traveling and last year I had back surgery, so I didn’t travel.  But now the time is right..Thank the lord.  We talk real often, but it is not the same.

Today is Bunko……Tomorrow is Bridge…Friday is clean house and finish yard .

We took the day Off!

Yesterday was for the Good Lord and rest for us.  Roy went to a company related Super Bowl Party, but the rest of the day was to piddle around and do no serious work.

Today, we head to College Station, I have an appointment with the Doctor for a check up and to get some prescriptions renewed.

I am also returning the HP Touch Smart Computer with the 64 bit Vista operating system, that nothing you have works on.  I loved the idea of no tower, everything in the 22 in screen case, but everything I tried to do messed up……too old for this new technology.  BUT…of course thing had to go wrong with old computer…the screen went out.  Luckily I had an older one and it is working ok.  It seems these things are designed with a set life span and then you buy a new one.

I am trying out some goat cheese recipes before I pass them on. Remember goat cheese has 30% less fat and calories and is gluten free, plus as I said before it taste great.

I am going to enjoy my day in the city, tomorrow Juan is back and it will be another day of work, but I thank God we have the freedom and health to work.

WHAT A DAY!

We started at 8:oo in the morn.  I picked up a young Hispanic worker, Juan speaks no English and Roy has a limited  Spanish vocabulary and I have none.  Off to a great start, but he is a good kid and learns quickly and know how to work.  Great!   We head to the lake house with 2 large cypress trees,  a tractor, shovel and 50 feet of chicken wire to wrap around the base of the trees until Roy get the real tree guards made.  The first thing we see is our neighbor’s very large willow tree on which Mr. Beaver has been very busy.  He as chipped away at over half the truck.  The tree will have to be cut down if he doesn’t do it soon.

We get our trees planted, watered and wire wrapped around the trunk and are ready to leave, when I ask Roy to knock down some old ugly coffee bean trees ………….BINGO …the ground is too soft and the tractor sinks, you know really sinks.  The wrecker man is nowhere to be found, so our little tractor is still stuck.

Being the up people we are, we blow that off for now and go into town and have lunch.

Now is time for Goat Worming.  If you have never wormed a goat, you don’t know what you are missing..  Our new catch pen is not ready to use yet, so we are still using one we built a while back.

The Rodeo begins….each goat must  be caught and given x number of ccs of worm medicine according to their weight.

Now goats don’t like to be penned up in close quarters and they certainly don’t like to be caught and  have  a long syringe inserted in their mouth.  Thank goodness for Juan, he is young and strong  and not afraid to grab hold of the biggest billy out there.  It not easy to catch and hold a 200 pound Billy who is trying to jump the fence and is a strong as a bull.

I couldn’t take pictures, I am too busy giving the medicine to the ones Roy and Juan are catching.

Success was ours, all except a few are wormed.  By this time, this old lady is tired…so after Roy and Juan move the goat sheds, we take Juan home, only to have him return today to do some yard work and clean up.

I came in the house to find that my monitor had gone out.  Ending to a wonderful day.  I had another one, so I hooked it up this morn and away we go.

This is a day on the Bar H Ranch….I hope you just can’t wait to get here to help us.  I will definitely give you a heads up on the next “Worming Date”.

Little Man is Gone

I think it is my fault…..His mother was very nervous, so I penned them up in a pen.  The problem was other little goats could get and out.  I also think , looking back that she just didn’t have enough milk .  She also had a bad habit of pawing him with her foot, which appeared to be to keep him very close to her.

I have never had a goat act like her and so I didn’t watch close enough to hopefully have saved him.  Roy gets on to me and says nature must take its course, but it is hard on both of us when we lose a goat. If the mother doesn’t calm down, she may go on the auction block.

Today is the day for” worming”.  We have a helper coming and hopefully he will not be afraid of the goats.  We have had one or two that were afraid to grab them.  We will see!  We run them in a shoot and each goat must be given liquid wormer by mouth, the number of ccs  determined by their size.  This is not one of our favorite days………

Our other project for the day, which will start at 7:00am is to plant 2 45gal Bald Cypress trees at the lake house.  This is not going to be an easy task.  Roy is taking the small tractor out there on a trailer to lift the trees of another trailer and set them in the ground after the holes are dug.  Believe me a  45 gal container with at least a 14 foot tree takes a big hole and the tree and ball are very heavy.

No, this was not a planned activity for today,  we went to Mexia for lunch and saw a sign that advertised a tree farm nearby…Roy loves cypress trees and has planted several small one, which the beavers cut down immediately.   Well, this time he says the beavers will need dental work if they try to take one of these down.  Last night he made 4ft high bull wire cages to put around each tree.   Now he says the fight is on!!!!!

 

I don’t have the heart to show him this cartoon, he has worked to hard yesterday and the work is not over.

  PS I got an email from  a cheese company yesterday that makes goat cheese and they have lots of great recipes, which I will share with you after I learn more about their company and try their cheese.

GOAT CHEESE

There is so much to tell you about the cheese, that I jump around a lot trying to cover as much information as possible without boring you. Please excuse …….

Goat cheese comes in a variety of  forms, but the most common is a soft easily spread cheese. Goat cheese is very popular in other parts of the world and is growing in popularity in this country.

Goat cheese has been made for thousands of years and was probably one of the earliest made dairy products. It is made in many countries the #1 being France, (called Chevre), then comes Spain, Portugal, United Kingdom, Greece, Norway, Italy and the US.

France has been making goat cheese since the 8th century. In Homer’s The Odyssey, the hero eats goat cheese with his wine. The most famous Greek cheese is feta.

The US is becoming a major producer of goat cheese, small producers are popping up all over the country producing a basic soft version of the cheese flavored with additional ingredients.

Goat cheese has a tangy flavor and can be very strong. Producers can control this several ways: nannies producing milk are kept away from the males and their diet is also controlled which produces a smoother flavor. The milk is often used by those who are young, ill, or have a low tolerance to cow’s milk. Goat milk is much more similar to human milk than a cow’s.

It is growing in popularity for several reasons, goat’s milk is leaner than cow’s so the cheese is leaner. Many dieters craving cheese, crumble it on their salad or melt it on cooked dishes. It also seems the goat cheese does not strain the heart as does some other cheese..because of it’s lower fat content.

For the above reasons in addition to the fact that goat cheese taste great, you should wander past the everyday cheese section and hunt down goat cheese for your next snack.

Creamy Goat Cheese and Honey

Creamy goat cheese is lightly dusted with pecans, honey and rosemary. These are so delicious, light, and refreshing, they could be served as appetizers or an interesting dessert, Spread them on your favorite crostini , bagel chips or melba toast and they go great on Sea Salt Chips.

ingredients

4 ounces goat cheese

2 ounces finely chopped pecans

2 tablespoons honey

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

2 springs fresh rosemary , minced

Divide the goat cheese into 12 equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball. Combine the crushed pecans and cinnamon in a bowl and roll each cheese ball in this mixture. Gently pat the balls into patties and place on serving tray and drizzle homey over the patties and sprinkle with rosemary.

Goat Meat!

I read that to be a successful blogger, you need to have a plan when you started out.  I got side tracked…..so here is my first real on target post.

Raising goats in the US has quickly become big business.  The demand in this country for goat meat is so high that producers can’t raise enough.

Most of the meat consumed in this country is imported from New Zealand or Australia.  63% of red meat consumed  world wide is goat.  The demand in this country comes mostly from ethnic groups, but that is slowly changing.  At the present time, goat meat is higher per pound that beef.

Why chevon(goat meat)?  It is low fat, good tasting and an alternative to chicken or fish.  Most people prefer meat from a goat that is at least 75% Boer…..this changes the flavor of the meat.

These 2 babies are great examples of full blooded boer. These young men are the sons of Cry Baby and Chocolate Chip.

The Boer goat is considered the “meat goat”.  They were developed in South Africa for their meat and hardiness.

DON’T SHY AWAY FROM GOAT MEAT!  If cooked properly, it is delicious.  It is usually grilled.  Recently there have been news articles about “fancy” restaurants in New York, Chicago, etc serving chevon.

Come on over to our little goat ranch and we will grill a goat for you, you will be surprised.

 

This is a picture of a standard Boer goat, but there are other colored goats that are 100% Boer.  Paints are becoming very popular.

I am not going to be able to go to Nashville…maybe next year…so I will extend date to sign up for bracelet  until the 5th of February and mail it on the 6th.

I love Erma Bombeck’s little book call “Eat Less Cottage Cheese and More Ice Cream”  When asked if she had her life to live over what would she change, one of the things she said, “if I had my life to live over again I would talked less and listened more.”   That is my thought for the day.

LITTLE MAN HAS BEEN REUNITED WITH HIS MOTHER…SHE IS VERY NERVOUS (?), BUT SHE IS TAKING CARE OF HIM AND FEEDING HIM.   THANK GOODNESS!

Valentine Decorations

Time to put out all our red, pink and of course purple, with lots of hearts and flowers.

My daughter is coming the day I come home from Nashville, so I have decorated for Valentine’s.  I decorated the kitchen, guest bathroom and den.

The red tablecloth I bought on sale was to long for my table, so I tied up both ends with ribbon.

Hung 2 hearts and the word love in the window behind the table.

In china cabinet.

I don’t sew very well, but I made these chair covers a couple of years ago.

I love candles, so I grouped all of them on the table in the den.

A mixture of western and valentine’s ……eclectic?

Forgot to take pictures of the guest bathroom, so I will do that later.

PS  Little Man was up and crying at 2:00am for a bottle…..just like a little baby.  Now he is fast asleep….go figure!
