I have shown you pictures of Mr. Tom and Ms. Hen before,
but they have really grown and , Mr. Tom is starting to strut
his stuff again.
[I am amazed that they have still have never left our yard, which is 3 acres, so they have room to roam everyday.]
They are never very far from each other. We are hoping Ms.
Hen will make a nest and lay eggs. What could be cuter than
little turkeys running around.
She would lay between 4 – 17 eggs at a time and it takes about
28 days for them to hatch.
Mr. Tom does not and I repeat does not like NOISE! When
lawn people come he is crazy, he also objects loudly by
gobbling repeatedly to the starting of the mule, the leaf blower,
Roy’s truck, anything that makes noise. They have excellent
hearing, but no external ears. I recently found out that some
wild turkeys in a field near an Army Jet Plane test Airport,
dropped dead from the shock of the jets breaking the sound
barrier.
He has very large spurs, but has never tried to spur the cats or
the dogs when he feels they are too close, he flaps his wings.
I have learned a lot just watching them and reading about
them on the internet.
The average life span is 3-4 years, but I think these turkeys
will live longer.
These are pictures of my Mr. Tom. His snood, wattle and
caruncles are bright red, they turn this way when he is upset or
courting…he is courting here. You can see his beard in this
picture. It is the hairy thing hanging off his chest.
Hope you enjoyed your lesson on turkeys, I am always happy to
see them even if I have to wash off the concrete nearly everyday.
Happy Thanksgiving from the Bar
