Lots of thanks go to Susan @ southerndaydreamer.blogspot.com for hosting this day.
This post will be a little different than others today, but it is dear to my heart and I would like to share with you, if you will let me.
Hurricane Season started June 1 and we have already had one tropical storm form off the east coast of the US even the day before the season started. Many of our blogging friends live in areas that could be effected by a hurricane or even a strong tropical storm.
I take you back to Sept 13, 2008, as Hurricane Ike came ashore at the east end of Galveston. Ike was the third most destructive hurricane to make landfall in the US. Some people who foolishly remained on the Bolivar Peninsula, are still missing. The Peninsula bore the brunt of Ike’s right front quadrant, the worst part of a hurricane.
This is where I lived before marrying Roy and it was and is a very dear place to me.
This was my daughter’s beautiful three story front row home, she sold just weeks before the hurricane. We only found pieces of her siding.
This was the house next door to her.
Her house.
Houses behind her.
Local Gas Station
My brother’s house
My house I sold in 2001, did come out better than most, but it blew in front doors and so the inside was in bad shape.
They estimated that the lost homes exceeded 80% and could top 95%.
Why am I showing this? We need to be aware of blogging friends who could be affected by a hurricane in 2009 or some other devastating quirk of nature and be ready to help if we can, at least pray for them and let them know you are thinking of them.
Thanks for letting me share this post with you.
Happy Outdoor Wednesday!

Dern. My daughter in Houston was effected but not by much. We in Bryan got a lot of rain but not much else. Thanks for the timely reminder.

So sorry to see how devastating Ike was to your family.
I'm just north of Houston, so we only dealt with no power and lots of clean up.

Such devastation! I live in tornado alley so it is a different kind of threat. I guess there is no place that is immune. Prayers for a good year!
Happy Outdoor Wednesday Barbara! A very good post...to remind us all... I am happy you and your family survived the storm! Thanks for sharing your photos.~ Susan
Wow such devestation, you are correct that they need our prayers - life is so special !
Hugs ~ Kammy
We are pretty safe from those horrific acts of nature where I live. I can only sympathize with all of the people who have lost so much. It must be very hard on them mentally and emotionally.
I hope this is a better year.
I can't even imagine this type of devastation. I have lived through earthquakes and floods but no hurricaines!
Oh My Barbara.. Such horrible devastation.. I can't even imagine the horror of seeing your home that way. Thank you for reminding us to keep those in our minds and prayers.
Debbie
Its all so humbling to see it. We have all watched the TV but these put it much more personal.
Thanks for sharing and bringing it close.

that was awful, we do need to remember and pray for others.
My word, all that to your family! Thanks for reminding us that we are all capable of so much during any major adversity.
Those photos say so much! Since we live on the beach I know the fear of hurricanes! Hurricane Ivan changed our lives in so many ways. I pray we are all spared for hurricanes this year and for years to come.
Hugs!

Amazing pictures...so sad to see all of those beautiful houses destroyed. I am sure they were beautiful.

Barbara, I'm sorry to see all of that devastation to you and your family. Unbelievable. I live in MN and we experience a tornado now and then, but nothing of this magnitude. Hope your summer is a safe one. ~ Robyn
Thank you for sharing this with us. We all need reminders about the losses others have endured. God bless you and your family.
Thanks for reminding us. I was in Gulf Shores after Katrina with my husband who went into New Orleans as an insurance adjuster. He cried everyday when he got back to the hotel..
Thank you for sharing these photos with us...we tend to go on with our lives and put disasters like this behind us. We need reminding how much we are blessed each day.
Happy OW!!
Oh boy!! Do I know about Hurricanes. Hurricane Andrew hit me on August 23, 1992 around 2am. Yep, I'll never forget it. My 4 month old was nearly ripped from my arms as our place of protection fell to pieces. Hurricanes stink!! What did I do?
I moved an hour north of Atlanta, ha ha. No more of that stuff for me. I wish you well.

Hi Barbara, we were rained out today so I am trying to visit my blogging friends. It makes me happy as I was ready for a break.
I so understand the terrible destruction that can happen in a bad hurricane. Bill and I were both raised in Florida. Both of our parents moved to Miami when we were nine years old. His family in 1945 and mine in 1947. Our families lived five miles apart and we did not know each other until we were both past our twenties. We attended different high schools.
Back to the subject of hurricanes. We saw many through the years and learned to fear them. The last real bad one was Andrew. Several of my relatives lost their homes and my aunt lost her life. The shock of her home being destroyed and she had bad asthma too, just killed her.
I am so sorry about your families losses. You just can't explain the loss to anyone who never experienced a bad hurricane. Your post is very important to share the losses people can suffer. I didn't mean to go on so but you hit a nerve. Sigh. I hope this year doesn't have a serious hurricane.
Thanks for sharing.
Hugs...Jeanne
Oh, that was terrible. We have one here too (not directly in my place)and it really is a devastating thing what the typhoon will leave us with. But, my everything is wiped out!

So sorry about the devastation.
Thanks for sharing. When we are not involved directly in tragedy's like this, we tend to forget about it once it is no longer front page news. And I know the effects lasts for years if not forever to those involved. So it is good to be reminded that we need to be there for one another. Hopefully this year will be a slow year for hurricanes, tornadoes & earthquakes (I live in SoCal). And that those that do happen will not be so devastating.
I'm so sorry to see the devastation in your family's homes. It's one thing to see it on the news and another to see the photos of someone personally involved.
I always pray for everyone in the south during hurricane season. It's so scary. And then the tornadoes that pop up inland as the storm moves. We are very blessed here in CA. Yes, we have earthquakes but they are few, far between and only rarely devastatingly destructive.
May God bless and watch over all of you this hurricane season.
